Indian-American voters express dissatisfaction with Trump ahead of US midterms

Immigration, the domestic economy, and US-India relations are key concerns for the community before the November 3 elections, according to The Times of India.

Indian-Americans are moving towards the Democratic Party ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, according to a report by The Times of India. While the community makes up approximately 1.5 per cent of the US population, their political preferences are attracting attention.

A Carnegie survey found that 64 per cent of Indian-Americans disapproved of Trump's handling of immigration. Concerns include the H-1B programme, visa renewals, and a new weighted selection system that favours higher-paid applicants.

The administration has also introduced a $100,000 payment requirement for certain new H-1B applications from workers outside the US and expanded social-media screening for applicants and H-4 dependents.

Economic issues are also driving dissatisfaction. The survey reported that 68 per cent of Indian-Americans disapproved of Trump's handling of domestic economic policy, including inflation, taxes, and government spending.

International economic policy saw the highest level of disapproval, with 70 per cent of Indian-Americans disagreeing with Trump's management of trade, tariffs, and sanctions.

The community also expressed disapproval regarding the handling of US-India relations. While the survey does not rank foreign policy as a decisive factor for the congressional vote, dissatisfaction with the relationship has increased.
