BJP councillor slaps party worker in Prayagraj for questioning deputy CM

An FIR was registered after a councillor slapped a worker during a party conference over UGC equity regulations.

A BJP councillor slapped a party worker in Prayagraj on Sunday during a party event, according to reports by Deccan Herald and Telegraph India. The incident occurred at the Parade Ground during a 'Prabuddh Sammelan' when the worker questioned Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya regarding the University Grants Commission (UGC) equity regulations.

The worker, Rohit Tiwari, also known as Kaka, filed a complaint at the Daraganj police station on Monday evening, leading to the registration of an FIR against councillor Vinay Mishra. The confrontation began when Tiwari and another man interrupted Maurya to ask when he would speak about the stayed UGC (Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions) Regulations, 2026.

As police intervened to escort the men from the venue, Mishra allegedly ran towards them, caught hold of Tiwari, and slapped him. A video of the exchange has gone viral on social media.

Allahabad North BJP MLA Harshvardhan Bajpai said that Maurya should have taken action against the councillor for attacking Tiwari. Bajpai described Tiwari as a committed party worker from the Gangapar area of Koraon who had no intention of putting the party in an awkward position.

The MLA stated that the Brahmin community was hurt by the humiliation of the worker. He noted that Tiwari raised the UGC issue because it is an emotionally sensitive matter regarding future generations.

The UGC Regulations, 2026, were notified on January 13, but the Supreme Court placed an interim stay on the rule on January 29 following protests over potential misuse.
