Two SFI activists suspended for disrupting Maharaja’s College convocation ceremony
The college council formed an inquiry committee to probe the incident that caused Higher Education Minister Roji M. John to leave the event.
The council of Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, decided on Monday to suspend two Students Federation of India (SFI) activists following a protest during a convocation ceremony on Friday, according to The Hindu. The suspended individuals are college union chairperson V. Praneel Raj and vice-chairperson Nafeesathul Misriya.
The disruption occurred after Higher Education Minister Roji M. John completed his inaugural address. The activists allegedly sought answers regarding the suspension of 16 students from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady.
The incident caused the Minister to leave the function midway.
The college council stated the disruption violated campus disciplinary norms and noted condemnation from various quarters, including parents. A five-member inquiry committee has been formed to probe the incident and must submit a report within 10 days.
The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) alleged the activists behaved like criminals and created an atmosphere of intimidation. The CMO stated the SFI leadership should apologise to students, parents, and the public.
Minister Roji M. John said the incident was unfortunate and that he had asked students to raise questions after the programme due to protocol. He noted he answered their questions before leaving the venue.
SFI State secretary P.S. Sanjeev alleged the disciplinary action was taken because the activists asked legitimate questions. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan described the police action and alleged cyberattacks against Nafeesathul Misriya as undemocratic and inhuman.
