Bageshwar Dham priest apologises after controversial remarks on Lord Krishna

Dhirendra Shastri issued an apology after comparing the physical postures of Lord Krishna and Lord Ram during a religious event.

Bageshwar Dham head priest Dhirendra Shastri has apologised for comments made regarding the appearance and mannerisms of Lord Krishna. The remarks were made during a Ram Katha in Karera, Shivpuri district, according to The Indian Express.

In a video that went viral, Shastri compared the physical stance of Lord Krishna with that of Lord Ram. He described Lord Krishna's posture as crooked in three places, noting his crossed feet, bent waist, and tilted neck while playing the flute. He contrasted this with Lord Ram, stating that the latter stands, looks, and walks straight.

Shastri also commented on the significance of the flute, suggesting that playing it is a sport, whereas using a bow is not. He further remarked that a person on stage was also playing the flute.

Religious leaders in Mathura criticised the comments, stating that comparing the two deities was inappropriate and could hurt devotee sentiments. They argued that both are manifestations of the same divine being and warned that religious figures should be cautious with such public statements.

Shastri clarified that his words were intended to explain a devotional verse and had been taken out of context. He stated that he did not intend to create a distinction between Lord Ram and Lord Krishna.

The priest added that he is a devotee of Lord Krishna and a part of the Braj tradition. He said he did not intend to divide society or the gods, noting that his own name includes Krishna's name.
