Violence and looting erupt during cost of living protests in Germany

Clashes in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg led to at least 54 arrests and over 100 injured police officers.

Riots broke out in several German cities late on Saturday as demonstrations over the cost of living turned violent, according to BBC News.

The rallies were organised by the campaign group Gen Z regelt. While thousands participated in largely peaceful demonstrations across the country, violence eventually erupted.

In Frankfurt, rioters looted shops in the central part of the city. German authorities stated that at least 54 people were arrested in Frankfurt.

Outbreaks of violence were also reported in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg. More than 100 police officers were left injured, according to German authorities.

The demonstrations occurred as protests over rising living costs, poor public services and a lack of affordable housing take place across Europe.
