Kerala mulls special law to protect women from social media attacks

Chief Minister V D Satheesan said the government is considering legislation to penalise those who insult or attack women online.

The Kerala government is reviewing the possibility of enacting a special Act to safeguard women from social media insults and attacks, according to The Federal on Monday.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan said the move follows a Supreme Court verdict and aims to address the lack of protection provided by current laws.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 'Makalkoppam' seminar in Thiruvananthapuram, Satheesan said the government wants to send those who attack women on social media to prison.

The Chief Minister noted that while political leaders can defend themselves against online attacks, ordinary women often lack the means to do so.

The two-day seminar, organised by the Women and Child Development Department, seeks stakeholder input to formulate a women's policy.

Satheesan also mentioned that a project to ensure the financial independence of every Kudumbashree member will be launched soon through region-specific initiatives.
