Cyclone Murasu threatens southern Odisha with heavy rainfall
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for five southern districts as the system approaches the Andhra Pradesh coast.
Cyclone Murasu is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several parts of Odisha, particularly in the south, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts for November 3 and 4.
The weather system is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal on Monday. It is expected to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narasapur by the morning of November 3. While the cyclone may not make direct landfall in Odisha, its indirect impact is expected to trigger thunderstorms and widespread rain.
The IMD has also issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and rain in 16 districts. On Monday, southern Odisha may see light to moderate rainfall, with Ganjam and Gajapati districts potentially receiving 7 cm to 12 cm of rain at isolated locations.
Heavy rainfall is forecast for several other districts on November 3, including Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Khordha and Puri. On November 4, rainfall is expected in Nuapada, Nayagarh, Puri, Khordha, Bolangir and Bargarh, alongside the five districts under orange warning.
The IMD has advised residents to monitor weather updates, seek shelter during thunderstorms to avoid lightning, and follow urban traffic advisories. Rainfall activity is expected to decline from November 5, with intensity reducing on November 6 and 7.
