Police officer killed by liquor-laden truck in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas

Khategaon Station House Officer Dilip Puri died after a driver allegedly ran him over while attempting to escape on the Indore-Betul highway.

A police officer died early on Monday in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district after being run over by a truck allegedly transporting illicit liquor, according to Hindustan Times.

Khategaon Station House Officer (SHO) Dilip Puri was on the Indore-Betul highway following reports of smuggling when the incident occurred.

Excise department sub-inspector Pooja Gehlot said the vehicle had been parked near a roadside eatery since Sunday night.

When Puri attempted to question the driver, the man allegedly drove over a road divider to flee, causing the truck's rear wheel to run over the officer.

Puri was taken to a hospital but could not be saved, officials said.

Dewas Superintendent of Police Aditya Mishra stated that more than 1,800 litres of illicit liquor were recovered from a secret compartment in the seized truck.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, and a search is currently underway to locate him.

The incident follows reports from villagers that 10 people recently died after consuming suspected poisonous liquor in the district.
