Centre notifies three new FRRO offices in Nagaland, Tripura and Odisha
The expansion brings the total number of Foreigners Regional Registration Offices in India to 20.
The Centre has notified three new Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRRO) in Kohima, Agartala and Bhubaneswar, according to a government statement reported by ThePrint on Monday.
The new offices in Nagaland, Tripura and Odisha bring the total number of FRROs in the country to 20. Previously, Kohima and Agartala were under the jurisdiction of FRRO Kolkata, while Bhubaneswar was under FRRO Hyderabad.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had directed officials to ensure one FRRO in every state capital to cater to foreigners visiting for tourism, medical and education purposes. Since 2025, five new offices have already started working in Jaipur, Chandigarh, Aizawl, Amravati and Guwahati.
The expansion aims to facilitate legitimate travel and stay for foreigners while ensuring the effective implementation of immigration laws and security requirements. The FRRO monitors compliance with immigration laws, handles visa violations and overstays, and coordinates legal action.
The government is considering further increasing the network in states including Bihar, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya.
Under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, the Bureau of Immigration is assisted by the FRRO as authorised by the Central Government to regulate the entry, stay, movement and exit of foreign nationals.
