Bihar woman dies in Ludhiana factory accident, kin allege negligence
The family of Geeta Devi, a machine operator, staged a protest demanding compensation and action against the factory management.
A 40-year-old machine operator, Geeta Devi, died on Sunday evening after her dupatta got entangled in a machine at a factory in Focal Point, Phase 5, Ludhiana, according to The Tribune.
Geeta Devi, a native of Gaya district in Bihar, had been working at the factory for five years. She lived in Dashmesh Market, Dhandari Khurd, with her family.
The victim's husband, Saros, alleged that the factory management did not provide masks to workers despite dust being generated by the machines. He claimed Geeta Devi had tied a stole around her face for protection before her dupatta got caught in the machine at around 7 pm.
Saros further alleged that factory staff took his wife to a hospital without informing him, though he claimed she had already died at the spot.
Family members and labour activist Chitranjan Kumar protested outside the factory, alleging that Geeta Devi was not provided with PF and ESI benefits during her five years of employment.
ASI Ranjit Singh of the Jiwan Nagar police post reached the spot with a team and assured an investigation into the matter.
