Solex Energy considers US expansion amid India solar cell capacity gap
The Gujarat-based company is evaluating a $1.5 billion roadmap through 2030 that includes potential investments in the United States.
Solex Energy is considering building solar module and cell manufacturing capacity in the United States, according to a report by Urban Acres. Chairman and Managing Director Chetan Shah said the company is studying investment requirements and possible locations for the proposed US facilities.
The company currently operates a 4 GW module manufacturing facility in Gujarat. Shah plans to increase module capacity to 10 GW, while also establishing 10 GW of cell manufacturing and 2 GW of ingot and wafer production.
The expansion comes as India faces a structural imbalance in its renewable energy supply chain. As of October 2026, India's reported module manufacturing capacity is approximately 262 GW, while cell capacity is around 37 GW.
Shah noted that the United States is the largest global solar market. He stated that high anti-dumping duties on Chinese imports make India a viable provider of low-cost alternatives.
Regarding domestic policy, Shah said the industry supports government objectives under the ALMM-II framework. However, he requested a 12-month extension of the framework, citing current market conditions for cell availability.
The company has not yet disclosed specific details regarding the US project, including locations or a confirmed construction schedule, citing regulatory compliance.
