Delhi traders claim ₹10,000-12,000 crore loss from INDIA bloc rally
Chamber of Trade & Industry Chairman Brijesh Goyal said 80 per cent of shops in nearby markets remained closed.
Delhi's trading sector suffered estimated losses of ₹10,000 crore to ₹12,000 crore due to disruptions caused by the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, according to Business Standard and The Tribune.
Chamber of Trade & Industry (CTI) Chairman Brijesh Goyal claimed that around 20 to 25 major markets in the vicinity of the venue were affected. He stated that approximately 2,50,000 out of nearly 3,00,000 shops remained closed due to panic over the expected arrival of large crowds and vehicles.
Goyal said the movement of 3,00,000 to 4,00,000 people who usually travel to the capital for business was affected. He also claimed that around 5,000 vehicles, including small tempos and trucks, could not operate, disrupting the loading and unloading of goods.
The disruption occurred during the peak Diwali trading season. CTI Vice President Rahul Adlakha told ANI that traders from outside Delhi cancelled visits and those with open shops remained idle because there were no buyers.
The rally at Ramlila Maidan was attended by opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee, and Akhilesh Yadav. The Delhi Vyapar Mahasangh also flagged concerns regarding the impact on the livelihoods of employees and labourers.
