Delhi traders claim Rs 10,000 crore loss after INDIA bloc rally

Chamber of Trade and Industry Chairman Brijesh Goyal said 2.5 lakh shops closed due to disruptions.

The trading sector in Delhi suffered an estimated loss of between Rs 10,000 and Rs 11,000 crore due to disruptions from the INDIA bloc rally at Ramlila Maidan, according to Moneycontrol on Sunday.

Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) Chairman Brijesh Goyal said approximately 2.5 lakh shops out of nearly 3,00,000 in 20 to 25 major markets near the venue remained closed. Goyal attributed the closures to panic regarding the expected arrival of large crowds and vehicles.

Goyal stated that the movement of suppliers, dealers, and customers from towns near Delhi was impacted. He claimed that between 3 lakh and 4 lakh people who typically visit the capital for business were unable to arrive.

The CTI Chairman also said that about 5,000 vehicles, including trucks and small tempos, could not operate. This disrupted the transport of goods from industrial areas and hubs to markets in Central and Old Delhi.

The disruption occurred during the peak Diwali season. Goyal noted that even in shops that stayed open, sales were almost non-existent because there were no customers.

The rally at Ramlila Maidan included opposition leaders such as Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee, and Akhilesh Yadav.
