West Bengal to provide government jobs to families of political violence victims

The state government has notified a scheme to offer Group D positions to one eligible family member of those killed since 2001.

The West Bengal government has issued a notification to provide government jobs to the families of individuals killed in political violence dating back to 2001, according to reports by The Hindu and Economic Times.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the decision on Saturday in Paschim Medinipur’s Garbeta, and the official notification was signed by Chief Secretary Manoj Agarwal on Sunday.

The initiative, titled the West Bengal Scheme for Providing Government Employment (Group D Post) to One Eligible Family Member of the Victims Killed in Political Violence, 2026, offers Group D roles as a special dispensation.

Eligible applicants include a spouse, child, or third-gender child of the deceased. If the victim was unmarried, a sibling may also be considered as a dependent family member.

To qualify, the family's monthly income must not exceed Rs 50,000. Applicants are required to submit an FIR, a death certificate, details of the incident, and proof of their relationship to the deceased.

A screening committee, consisting of District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police, will review the applications. The state has seen various instances of political violence during several election cycles over the past decades.
