The district administration and several organisations celebrated the 71st Rajyotsava in Dharwad on Sunday, according to The Hindu.
District in-charge Minister Santosh Lad unfurled the Kannada flag and offered pooja to Goddess Bhuvaneshwari at the R.N. Shetty District Stadium. Main roads and traffic circles in the city were illuminated and decorated with flowers and Kannada flags.
Minister Lad stated that the State government is committed to the comprehensive development of the district and requested cooperation from the people. He noted that while people in the district are suffering losses due to drought, the State government's welfare schemes and development works will continue.
Lad recalled the history of the movement for the unification of Karnataka, noting that undivided Dharwad district played a major role in realising the unification of Kannada-speaking areas. He called on youths to remember the sacrifices of eminent Kannada personalities.
The celebrations included cultural programmes by students and troupes such as Jaggalige Tanda. Various institutions, including Karnatak University and the Alur Venkatrao Memorial Trust, also celebrated the occasion.
The event was attended by Rajya Sabha member M. Nagaraj, MLC Lingaraj Patil, Deputy Commissioner Snehal R., and Police Commissioner Bhushan Borse, among others.
