Assam launches eviction drive on 215 acres in Dhubri district

The operation in Alamganj Part-9 is expected to displace nearly 550 families from the allegedly encroached land.

The Assam government launched an eviction drive on Sunday to clear 650 bighas, or nearly 215 acres, of allegedly encroached land in the Dhubri district. According to India Today, the exercise began in Alamganj Part-9 of the Gauripur circle and is expected to displace nearly 550 families.

Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath told PTI that notices were sent to approximately 700 families accused of encroaching on 800 bighas of land. He stated that 150 people living on around 150 bighas approached the court for relief, and because the matter is sub judice, those lands were excluded from the drive.

The administration proceeded with the remaining 650 bighas. Nath said many families had voluntarily left the area after receiving notices and that the exercise was underway peacefully. He added that the administration aimed to clear the area on Sunday.

To carry out the operation, the district administration deployed 50 excavators, several tractor-trolleys, and other machinery. The drive was supported by thousands of police and civil administration personnel.

The Pioneer reported that some residents claimed they had purchased the plots from private individuals without knowing the land belonged to the government. These residents appealed to the administration for alternative housing.
