Protesters detained in Kalaburagi for attempting to hoist separate state flag
Kalyana Karnataka Pratyeka Rajya Jagruti Horata Samiti members were taken into custody while demanding separate statehood for the region.
Police detained Kalyana Karnataka Pratyeka Rajya Jagruti Horata Samiti president M S Patil Naribola and several others in Kalaburagi on Sunday. The group was attempting to hoist a flag at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Circle to seek separate statehood.
According to the Deccan Herald, more than 10 protesters led by the Samiti tried to lead a procession from the district court complex to Vijnaneshwara Circle and then to Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Circle. The police detained the protesters near Siddharta Law College.
The protesters demanded that the state government recommend to the centre that Kalyana Karnataka be granted separate statehood on the lines of Telangana. They alleged the government has shown a step-motherly attitude towards the development of Kalyana Karnataka.
Condemning the arrests, Samiti president Naribola said that Article 371 (J) is not being implemented effectively. He claimed that officials and people’s representatives are not taking the matter seriously.
Naribola stated, “You may arrest us today, but our protest will continue.”
