Power utilities told to prepare for Cyclone Murasu

Special Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand directed utilities to safeguard electricity infrastructure and prepare for rapid restoration works.

Special Chief Secretary (Energy) K. Vijayanand has instructed power utilities to implement precautionary measures to protect electricity infrastructure as Cyclone Murasu threatens the state, according to The Hindu.

During a teleconference on Sunday, Vijayanand told utilities to keep enough essential materials, such as transformers, conductors and poles, in stock. He also directed the strategic positioning of machinery, vehicles and manpower in vulnerable areas.

The India Meteorological Department has predicted that the system will become a severe cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by November 2. It is expected to cross the coast near Bapatla on the morning of November 3.

Officials told the Special Chief Secretary that a depression over the Bay of Bengal might develop into a deep depression and then into Cyclone Murasu. Moderate to heavy rainfall, including isolated very heavy rainfall, is expected over south and central coastal districts on November 2.

Strong winds and heavy rain are expected to threaten power infrastructure, specifically electricity poles. Vijayanand stressed that utilities must identify cyclone-prone locations early and coordinate with district administration for safety and relief measures.
