Iran and Qatar propose reopening Strait of Hormuz within two days
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the waterway could reopen if the United States meets specific conditions set by Tehran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that ongoing talks with Qatari mediators involve a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days, provided the United States meets Tehran's conditions, according to Al Jazeera.
Araghchi noted that discussions with Qatar helped reduce the timeframe for reopening the waterway from a five-day period to two days.
The Iranian Foreign Minister outlined several demands, including the lifting of sanctions imposed after the Islamabad memorandum, a reduction in US military forces in the region, the restoration of oil waivers, and the release of frozen Iranian funds, including those held in Qatar.
Araghchi added that Tehran is seeking formal recognition of shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz discussed with Oman, alongside the closure of other routes.
Iran's top security official Mohsen Rezaei said that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless seven conditions are met. Rezaei also warned on X that Iran would use new weaponry to deliver devastating blows to any aggressor if the country is attacked.
Tehran's demands also include ending the war on all fronts, specifically mentioning Israel's attacks on Lebanon.
