Iran labels UK Royal Navy, Air Force as terrorist organisations

Tehran also classified the British Secret Intelligence Service as a hostile group on Sunday.

Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday designated the United Kingdom's Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as terrorist organisations. According to reports by ANI and The Tribune, the ministry also classified the Secret Intelligence Service, known as MI6, as a hostile group.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that these measures were taken following a resolution by the country's Supreme National Security Council. The ministry said the decision was a response to hostile actions by Britain over the past year and was intended to protect national security and interests.

Tehran explained that the move was prompted by Britain's purported role in the US-Israeli war against Iran. The ministry claimed Britain has provided military and logistical facilities within territories under its jurisdiction to support the conflict.

The Iranian government further stated that the designations follow the principle of reciprocity and international law. The ministry accused the British government of pursuing policies that go against the United Nations Charter and respect for national sovereignty.

The decision follows the UK government's July 13, 2026, move to place Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) under the State Threats Act 2026. Under that UK law, anyone assisting the IRGC could face up to 14 years in prison, Al Jazeera reported.
