Texas school to be named after custodian of 39 years
Marilyn Hampton will have a new elementary school in Aubrey named after her following her long service to the district.
A new elementary school in Aubrey, Texas, will be named after Marilyn Hampton, a custodian who served the Aubrey Independent School District for 39 years, according to the Times of India.
Officials announced the decision on October 21 during a meeting of the district's board of trustees. Hampton, who retired in 2022, was unaware of the honour and attended the meeting under the impression she was discussing a school-related matter.
Superintendent Shannon Saylor asked Hampton to unroll a red carpet at the meeting, which featured the words 'Marilyn Hampton Elementary School'.
While her official role involved cleaning classrooms and facilities, Hampton also helped students with assignments, provided school supplies, and worked at football games. Saylor said that although Hampton did not hold a teaching position, she was an educator at heart.
The new building, formerly known as Elementary School Number Five, is scheduled to open in August 2027.
Hampton, who is 76, expressed that she was overwhelmed by the recognition and stated she was happy with how her life turned out.
