Protests continue in Mansa after anti-drug activist is shot dead

A permanent sit-in protest has been established in Punjab's Tikoni area following the death of Parvinder Singh Jhota.

Anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota, 40, was shot dead in broad daylight in Mansa town, Punjab, on October 13.

A permanent sit-in protest, or pucca morcha, has been established in the Tikoni area of the town. Large hoardings at the site describe Jhota as a martyr and urge people to protect his ideals and continue the fight against drugs.

A steady crowd of men, women, young people, and the elderly continues to arrive at the protest site. These protesters are moving past barricades and signboards at the location.

Traffic police have implemented road diversions in the area. The source notes that Punjab has been battling drug addiction for more than two decades.

As of a fortnight after the shooting, Jhota's last rites had not yet been held.
