Basavaraj Bommai to seek interim relief for sugarcane farmers
BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai plans to meet the Central panel on sugar prices in New Delhi to address farmer issues.
BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai said on Sunday that he will urge the Central panel on sugar prices, headed by Ramesh Chand, to provide interim relief to sugarcane farmers.
Speaking in Haveri, Bommai said he has sought an appointment with the panel in New Delhi on Thursday. He intends to submit a letter to help resolve farmer issues and allow sugar factories to begin their crushing season.
Bommai stated he will also urge Union Minister for Food Pralhad Joshi to accept the interim relief formula. He noted that the Union government fixes the Minimum Selling Price for sugar and the Fair and Remunerative Price for sugarcane.
The MP said that farmers, farmer organisations, the State government, and the Union government must pressure sugar factories to pay higher prices. He added that sugar factories ultimately write the checks to farmers.
The remarks came after members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha gheraoed Bommai following a Rajyotsava function. Farmers demanded that he pressure Pralhad Joshi to announce a revised MSP for sugar.
One farmer suggested stopping sugar factories from starting crushing until prices are revised. Bommai responded that he will direct the Deputy Commissioner to do so.
