Telangana allocates Rs 120 crore for water supply in Singur-dependent districts
The state government has sanctioned funds to prevent drinking water shortages caused by the anticipated impact of El Nino.
The Telangana government has sanctioned Rs 120 crore to provide alternative drinking water in Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy and Nizamabad districts, according to a Deccan Chronicle report. These districts rely on the Singur reservoir, where water levels have fallen below dead storage levels.
Rural water supply minister Dhanasari ‘Seethakka’ Anasuya stated that the money will facilitate alternative water arrangements in regions prone to shortages. Other districts have been allocated Rs 1 crore each to address immediate needs.
During a teleconference on Saturday with Mission Bhagiratha and public health engineers, the minister reviewed preparedness for El Nino. She instructed officials to locate vulnerable villages with low groundwater and prepare local solutions.
The minister advised officials to use available local sources, hire borewells, and use tankers if required. She noted that hand pumps, wells, and various water supply schemes must remain operational for emergencies.
Dhanasari ‘Seethakka’ Anasuya also called for water conservation awareness at the village level. She directed officials to monitor reservoir storage and ensure rainwater percolates into the ground in areas including Hyderabad, Medchal, Khammam and Yadadri.
Officials were told to make existing recharge and magic pits functional within two days to assist rainwater harvesting.
