Tamil Nadu liquor prices to rise from November 1

State-run TASMAC will implement a new Rs 10 environmental and social welfare cess on all retail alcohol purchases.

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) is implementing a new Rs 10 environmental cess on alcoholic beverages starting Sunday. This charge will apply to every retail purchase of beer, wine, or IMFL across all districts in the state.

A senior TASMAC official said on Saturday that the move is intended to generate revenue for environmental and social welfare initiatives managed by the state. The official noted that retail shops and licensed establishments are preparing for the rollout.

According to a TASMAC circular, the corporation has instructed suppliers and local producers to update their pricing structures to meet the deadline. This includes directions for manufacturers and wholesale depots to use QR codes for accurate price labelling.

To maintain financial transparency, TASMAC has established dedicated bank accounts across five regional zones. The official also warned staff against collecting any unauthorised extra money from customers.

Under the new mechanism, consumers can claim a Rs 10 refund by returning eligible empty bottles to authorised vendors.
