Rescue operation launched for eight trekkers stranded in Uttarakhand

Eight people, including seven from West Bengal, are stuck on the Kedartal route after an avalanche blocked their path.

Eight people, including seven trekkers from West Bengal and one local guide, are stuck on the Kedartal trek in Uttarkashi district after an avalanche blocked the path beyond Bhoj Kharak, according to The New Indian Express.

The 13-member group, consisting of seven trekkers and six support staff, departed from Gangotri on October 27 and was expected to return on October 29.

While three porters and a cook were located safely near Kachchi Dhang, the remaining eight individuals remain stuck. One of the stranded trekkers has reportedly sustained a head injury.

The district administration, led by District Magistrate Prashant Arya, has initiated a coordinated rescue effort. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Forest Department, and a trekking agency are involved.

On Sunday, SDRF personnel conducted aerial reconnaissance flights over the Kedartal area via helicopter, though no signs of the group or their tents were seen. A specialised mountaineering team has also been deployed.

The operation has faced difficulties due to heavy snowfall, glacier conditions, and poor weather. The administration is currently seeking helicopter assistance to assist with evacuations.
