Four employees of a private firm died after an explosion during maintenance work at a tank farm in Dibrugarh.
The death toll from a fire at an Oil India Ltd (OIL) facility in Assam's Dibrugarh district has reached four, according to reports by Hindustan Times. A mechanical helper, Sailen Gogoi, died on Sunday while receiving treatment at a private hospital, bringing the total number of fatalities to four.
The blaze occurred on November 6 following an explosion during maintenance work at the intermediate tank farm in Tengakhat. All the deceased were employees of Spectron Engineering Private Limited, a Mumbai-based company contracted by the public sector undertaking (PSU).
Three other injured workers remain in critical condition. OIL has suspended four employees, including three officers, who were in charge of the site pending a high-level inquiry.
The PSU has committed to paying Rs 10 lakh to the families of each person killed and Rs 5 lakh to each individual injured in the incident.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have been monitoring the situation. Sarma has instructed his principal secretary to coordinate with the OIL chairman-cum-managing director regarding medical care and compensation for the victims' families.
