Punjab Police deport wanted gangster Gurwinder alias Afridi from Ethiopia
The accused, a key member of the Doni Bal–Prabh Dassuwal gang, was brought to India following a 10-month international manhunt.
The Punjab Police on Sunday brought wanted gangster Gurwinder Singh, also known as Afridi, back to India from Ethiopia. He landed at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and is being escorted to Punjab by a team from the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF).
According to News18, the deportation followed a 10-month international manhunt. Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the mission, named Operation Shaheed, was conducted by the AGTF in coordination with the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) and central agencies.
DGP Yadav stated that preliminary investigations suggest Afridi was managing criminal operations in Punjab while living overseas. These activities allegedly included extortion-related shootings and targeted killings. The Punjab government had previously placed a Rs 5 lakh reward on his arrest.
Afridi is linked to more than 30 criminal cases, including five murders. He is an accused in the October 2024 killing of Aam Aadmi Party sarpanch Rajwinder Singh and the September 2025 murder of Congress block president Gurmel Singh. He was also named in an investigation regarding a 2022 attack on a church in Tarn Taran.
The police tracked the accused across Asia, South America, and Africa. He reportedly left India via Mumbai on March 31, 2025, using a passport obtained with a false identity. After travelling through the UAE, Kenya, and Angola, he was detained in Ethiopia on November 6.
Afridi is currently being taken to Punjab for further questioning and investigation into his criminal network.
