Gurgaon worker's commute dilemma sparks debate on rent and time

A social media video discussing a professional's choice between higher rent and long travel times has ignited online discussion.

A man earning ₹1.5 lakh a month in Gurgaon faces a choice between a long commute and higher rent, according to a report by the Times of India. The professional currently spends four hours every day travelling to and from his workplace.

Dr Sunny Garg shared the scenario in an Instagram video, noting that a flat closer to the office would cost an additional ₹25,000 per month. While the man's wife believes the extra cost would reduce family savings, the man expressed exhaustion from the daily travel.

Dr Garg questioned the impact of traffic on health and family time, asking if the extra rent is worth the time saved. He noted that while rent is a fixed cost, the exhaustion and lost time are harder to measure.

The video suggested alternatives to moving, such as negotiating hybrid work, changing office timings, carpooling, or staying near the office for part of the week. Dr Garg said people often get stuck between two options and fail to see other solutions.

Social media users responded with varying views. Some argued that time is valuable, while others noted that relocating requires considering factors like children's schools and safety. One user also pointed out that daily fuel costs should be factored into the decision.
