Maharashtra minister asks well-off farmers to return Rs 5,000 drought aid

Disaster management minister Girish Mahajan urged financially secure farmers to donate their relief funds to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

Maharashtra disaster management minister Girish Mahajan on Saturday urged financially capable farmers to voluntarily return their Rs 5,000 drought relief payments to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. According to reports from India Today, the appeal aims to provide support to farmers in greater need.

Speaking to reporters in Jalgaon district, Mahajan said that approximately 50 farmers and party workers from his Jamner constituency had already approached him to return the money. He noted that these individuals felt they did not require the assistance because they were financially secure and possessed other income sources.

The state government recently provided an advance of Rs 5,000 to eligible farmers in drought-affected areas before Diwali. On October 27, the Devendra Fadnavis government sanctioned Rs 7,500 crore to assist farmers across 304 drought-hit talukas. To qualify for this relief, farmers must have experienced crop damage exceeding 33 per cent.

Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Jadhav Patil stated on Friday that the state had already transferred Rs 4,372.83 crore to the bank accounts of 87,45,669 farmers as of November 5. The government is currently processing payments for the remaining eligible beneficiaries while addressing technical issues and bank account discrepancies.
