Abhishek Banerjee alleges BJP attack on Kolkata residence
The Diamond Harbour MP claimed the early morning incident was his seventh attempt on his life in six months.
Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee alleged that BJP supporters attacked his Kalighat residence in Kolkata at 2 am on Saturday, November 7, 2026. According to The Hindu, Banerjee claimed the incident was the seventh attempt on his life within a six-month period.
The clash reportedly began while Trinamool Congress supporters were gathered outside the house to celebrate the MP's birthday. The Indian Express reported that BJP supporters allegedly raised 'thief' slogans, leading to an argument and subsequent violence where banners and posters were torn.
Banerjee alleged that his home and office had been under surveillance for two days prior to the attack. He claimed that attackers used sticks and stones, and that several of his supporters sustained injuries, including one worker who lost part of a finger and another who suffered a fracture.
The Trinamool leader criticised the police and the judiciary, stating that no significant action had been taken despite the incident occurring in front of officers. He also expressed frustration with the courts, suggesting they were remaining silent spectators to the situation.
BJP leader and West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh dismissed the allegations as drama, questioning why anyone would want to kill the MP. He suggested the claims were an attempt to mislead the public using emotional rhetoric.
Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticised the attack and stated that her party was lodging complaints regarding the intimidation in the locality. Kolkata Police have enforced prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) outside the residence.
