Delhi air quality remains very poor on Diwali morning

Several areas in the national capital recorded severe pollution levels as the overall Air Quality Index reached 383 on Sunday.

Delhi residents faced very poor air quality on Diwali morning, Sunday, November 8, with several parts of the capital recording severe pollution levels, according to reports by Scroll and Times Now.

The overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 383 at 8 am on Sunday, according to the Sameer application which provides updates from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Multiple monitoring stations reported AQI levels above 400, indicating severe air pollution. Jahangirpuri recorded an AQI of 450, while Rohini, RK Puram, and Punjabi Bagh also reported severe levels.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had previously invoked Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR on Friday, November 6, as a precautionary measure.

In response to the worsening conditions, the Delhi Directorate of Education directed government and private schools to conduct classes for students up to Class 5 in hybrid mode starting November 7.

The Supreme Court has permitted the use of certified green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR for two days during the festival, though Scroll reported that vendors continued to sell regular firecrackers.
