IMD predicts heavy rain in southern states and snowfall in Kashmir

A Western Disturbance and cyclonic circulations are expected to bring intense downpours to the south and fresh snow to the north.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall for several southern states and fresh snowfall in northern Himalayan regions due to an approaching Western Disturbance, according to reports by Mint and Prabhat Khabar.

In the southern peninsula, cyclonic circulations over the Southeast Arabian Sea are expected to cause intense downpours. Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from 7 to 10 November, while Kerala and Mahe may see heavy rain on 7 and 8 November.

Coastal regions may experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, with some gusts potentially hitting 50 kmph. The IMD has warned of potential hazards including localised landslides, waterlogging, and damage to crops and structures.

In the north, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to affect the northwestern Himalayan region from 10 November. The IMD noted that isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall is likely over the Kashmir valley on 12 November.

Thunderstorms, lightning, and winds up to 60 kmph are anticipated across Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad. Meanwhile, Delhi is expected to have a mainly clear sky with shallow to moderate fog on 8 November.

The IMD has issued an advisory for residents to monitor weather conditions, seek safe shelter, and avoid standing under trees during lightning. Fishermen have been advised not to enter affected sea areas due to rough conditions.
