Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named Bihar captain for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The 15-year-old batter will lead the team for the opening two matches of the tournament starting November 14.

The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) has named 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as the captain of the Bihar team for the 2026-27 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. According to reports from Times Now, The Hindu and Moneycontrol, Sooryavanshi will lead the side for the first time in their opening match against Saurashtra at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on November 14.

Suraj Kashyap has been appointed as the vice-captain of the 17-member squad. Bihar is placed in Group B alongside Delhi, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Railways, Saurashtra, and Tamil Nadu.

Sooryavanshi will only be available for the first two games against Saurashtra and Railways. He is scheduled to fly to Qatar for the ACC Men's Asia Cup Rising Stars 2026, which runs from November 19 to November 29.

BCA President Harsh Vardhan said that Sooryavanshi has demonstrated talent, confidence and maturity at a young age. He added that the association is hopeful the team will deliver a disciplined and competitive performance under his leadership.

The teenager previously served as vice-captain for the East Zone team that won the Duleep Trophy. If he leads Bihar in the opening game, he will set a world record as the youngest captain of a T20 team in world cricket at 15 years and 232 days.
