Bihar Museum ranked ninth in world's 100 best museums list

The institution has secured a place among the top 10 museums according to a Munich-based travel guide.

The Bihar Museum has been ranked ninth in the 2026 edition of the World’s 100 Best Museums by Worth a Journey, according to The New Indian Express. The Munich-based travel guide and digital magazine was founded by Jakob Schwichtenberg.

Opened to the public in 2017, the museum was conceived under the leadership of then Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The structure was designed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki and is located along Nehru Path.

The museum's development involved the then Chief Secretary of Bihar, Anjani Kumar Singh, who is now the Director General. The institution's graphic identity was created by Anthony Lopez of Lopez Design.

The museum hosts the Bihar Museum Biennale, which began in 2021. Recent themes have included 'Bihar, India and the World', 'Together We Art', and 'Global South: Sharing Histories' in 2025.

The museum's collections include the Didarganj Yakshi, the Nalanda Gallery, and the Kurkihar bronzes. It recently hosted the Thinking Nalanda seminar, an engagement with the historic Nalanda site organized by Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS).
