Tamil Nadu government disbands high-level committee on Union-State relations

The mandate of the disbanded panel has been transferred to the Tamil Nadu State Law Commission, according to a Government Order.

The Tamil Nadu government has disbanded the High-Level Committee on Union–State Relations and transferred its mandate to the State Law Commission, according to The Hindu.

A Government Order (G.O.) issued on November 6, 2026, stated that the decision to discontinue the services of the committee was made with immediate effect.

The committee was formed in April 2025 by then Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to review constitutional provisions, statutes, and policies regarding Centre–State relations. It aimed to recommend measures to strengthen federalism and state autonomy.

The three-member panel was chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge Justice Kurian Joseph, with retired IAS officer K. Ashok Vardhan Shetty and former State Planning Commission Vice-Chairman M. Naganathan as members.

The committee had submitted Part I of its report to M.K. Stalin on February 16.

The G.O. noted that the High-Level Committee was a non-statutory body with functions that overlap with the Tamil Nadu State Law Commission. The Law Commission was re-constituted on August 7, 2026, to examine matters relating to Inter-State and Centre-State relations.

The G.O. clarified that while the High-Level Committee was a non-statutory body, the State Law Commission is also an executive body created by a Government Order.
