Odisha CM cancels Diwali celebrations at residence due to cyclone damage

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has asked citizens to support those affected by Cyclone Arnab and subsequent flooding across the state.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has cancelled all Diwali celebrations at his residence this year, according to Moneycontrol. The decision comes following the damage and suffering caused by Cyclone Arnab and subsequent floods in various parts of the state.

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) stated in a post on X that Majhi has also requested that people refrain from bringing bouquets or gifts for the occasion.

The CMO said the Chief Minister has appealed to the public to remain sensitive to people in affected areas and to extend a helping hand to those impacted by the disaster.

Heavy rainfall and floods triggered by Cyclone Arnab have severely impacted the southern districts of the state, displacing thousands of people and causing extensive damage to crops and property.

This follows a previous instance where Majhi skipped Durga Puja celebrations to show solidarity with farmers who faced crop losses from heavy rainfall in October.
