Delhi AQI crosses 500 as authorities implement GRAP-III measures
The Commission for Air Quality Management has invoked Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan across Delhi-NCR to curb rising pollution.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi reached 525 at 10:01 am on Saturday, November 7, according to AQI.in. This follows a period of deteriorating air quality in the national capital since late October.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked Stage III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on Friday evening, November 6, across Delhi-NCR. According to India Today, the decision was made after reviewing pollution forecasts and weather conditions, such as falling wind speeds, which could prevent pollutants from dispersing.
Under the GRAP-III restrictions, several construction and demolition activities are halted, including road construction, excavation, and brickwork. While essential infrastructure projects like metro, railway, and hospital works are exempt, they must follow pollution-control requirements. Additionally, stone crushers and mining activities across the NCR must shut down.
Vehicle restrictions have also been tightened. BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers are restricted in Delhi and specific NCR districts, including Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar. Certain older diesel goods vehicles are also subject to controls.
Educational and office provisions are included in the plan. Schools must move students up to Class V to a hybrid learning system, allowing for physical or online attendance. State governments may also permit up to 50 per cent of staff in public and private offices to work from home.
