The 15-year-old left-hander will lead the state in its opening two matches against Saurashtra and Railways in Indore.
The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) announced a 17-member squad on Friday, naming Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as captain for the first two matches of the 2026-27 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Suraj Kashyap has been appointed vice-captain, according to reports by The Indian Express and The Hindu.
Bihar will begin its campaign against Saurashtra on November 14, followed by a match against Railways on November 16. Both games are scheduled to be played in Indore. The squad also includes all-rounder Mangal Mahour and pacer Shakib Hussain, subject to fitness assessments after the first two matches.
Sooryavanshi, who recently made his international debut against England in July, will join the India A squad for the ACC Men's Asia Cup Rising Stars in Doha from November 19 to 29. Earlier this year, he served as vice-captain for the East Zone side that won the Duleep Trophy.
BCA president Harsh Vardhan said the captaincy would provide Sooryavanshi with an opportunity to develop as a cricketer and leader. He added that the association is hopeful the team will deliver a disciplined and competitive performance under his leadership.
The 15-year-old left-hander previously won the Orange Cap in IPL 2026 with 776 runs for Rajasthan Royals. He also played a pivotal role in India's Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup victory, scoring 175 in the final against England.
