Trump vows to use veto power if Democrats win Congress

The US President said he would block Democratic legislation and welcomed the nickname Mr. Veto following the 2026 midterm elections.

United States President Donald Trump has stated he will use his veto power to block legislation if the Democratic Party gains control of either chamber of Congress. According to News18, Trump made these remarks during a phone interview with CBS News before polling concluded on Tuesday.

Trump said he was prepared to be called "Mr. Veto" if Democrats secured a majority in the House of Representatives or the Senate. He suggested that his use of the veto could eventually lead Democrats to negotiate and reach bipartisan agreements.

The President argued that his authority has been strengthened by the Supreme Court ruling in Trump v. Slaughter, which allowed him to remove Rebecca Slaughter from the Federal Trade Commission. He claimed this 6-3 decision expanded presidential control over federal agencies, boards, and commissions.

While Democrats secured Senate re-election victories for Jon Ossoff in Georgia and Mark Warner in Virginia, Trump remained upbeat about Republican prospects. He credited his 33 campaign rallies held over 29 days for shifting the political narrative from predicted losses to a closer contest.

The White House has reportedly been discussing further executive actions regarding trade and immigration. Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought have been involved in these discussions, according to CBS News.

If Democrats win control, they will take over when the new Congress convenes in January 2027. While the President can veto bills, Congress can override a veto with a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and the Senate.
