Russian bombing kills 24 people at Ukrainian aid centre

The attack on a school used as a humanitarian hub in Komyshuvakha killed 24 people and left several others missing.

Russian bombs hit a school used as a humanitarian aid centre in the village of Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region on Monday, killing 24 people, according to Al Jazeera and BBC News. The strikes occurred in the southeastern part of Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that after an initial air strike, a second attack involving nine more bombs hit the shelter where people had gathered. Regional Governor Mykhailo Semikin reported that five people were injured and 27 were initially reported missing.

Among the dead were members of the rescue crew and police officers, according to reports from Al Jazeera and BBC News. Rescuers were shown working at the site where footage displayed buildings reduced to smouldering rubble.

Zelenskyy stated that the Russian forces could not have been unaware that residents received weekly assistance at that location. He said the killings were proof that Russia does not want de-escalation and is counting on more killings.

In other parts of the country, drone strikes injured 12 people in the Kharkiv region and five people in the port city of Odesa. The Russian Ministry of Defence said it shot down 212 Ukrainian drones overnight.
