VFX expert calls for mandatory AI labelling on social media

CB Arun Kumar suggests stricter laws to help viewers distinguish between real and fake content following misuse of actors' likenesses.

VFX expert and Pearl Academy dean CB Arun Kumar has called for laws that mandate bold labelling of AI-generated content on social media, according to a Hindustan Times report. He stated that current disclaimers on platforms like Instagram are often tiny and hidden, making it difficult for viewers to distinguish real content from fake.

The call for regulation comes as actors including Janhvi Kapoor, Keerthy Suresh, and Sunainaa have expressed shock and warned of legal action after seeing their likenesses used in objectionable deepfake videos or photos. Kumar noted that AI has become a tool for making money through such content.

While acknowledging the rise of deepfakes, Kumar said that blanket criticism of the technology is foolish. He argued that it is important to distinguish between general criticism and speaking up against the illegal use of AI trained on an artist's work without consent.

The expert also noted that digital artists are facing challenges as AI can perform work faster. He predicted that true artists who use AI as a tool in their pipeline will survive, whereas those who ignore the technology may be swept away.

Kumar described the current state of the industry as a situation where the Pandora's box is already open. He said that people must learn to live with AI and thrive rather than burying their heads in the sand.
