HYC demands independent probe into Advocate General's legal bills
The Hynñiewtrep Youths' Council has called for the resignation of Advocate General Amit Kumar over alleged billing discrepancies.
The Hynñiewtrep Youths' Council (HYC) has demanded the immediate resignation of Advocate General Amit Kumar and an independent, time-bound inquiry into his legal fees, according to the Meghalaya Monitor.
The council is seeking an investigation into all bills and payments made to Kumar, noting that total bills have crossed Rs 1 crore. The demand follows reports from Bar Associations on October 31 regarding billing of Rs 1,50,000 per appearance before a Commercial Court.
HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem said the revelations have deepened public concerns regarding the accountability of the state's highest law officer. He noted that on September 3, 2026, Kumar maintained his fees were within the Government-approved schedule of Rs 20,000 per High Court appearance and Rs 40,000 per Supreme Court appearance.
Synrem stated that the billing records appear to contradict the categorical statements Kumar made to the media. He said the situation appears to be an attempt to mislead the public and reminded that the money belongs to the people of Meghalaya.
The HYC has also demanded the disclosure of complete details of public expenditure on the Advocate General's office, including payments to his legal team and outstation counsels. They are seeking a public explanation on who authorised the alleged payments of Rs 1,50,000 per appearance.
Synrem urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to stop shielding Kumar and called on civil society and the legal fraternity to demand accountability.
