Maharashtra finds 9,509 excess school employees across 3,625 schools
The School Education Department has ordered officials to explain staffing discrepancies and payroll issues identified during a recent data review.
The Maharashtra School Education Department has identified 9,509 employees working in excess of sanctioned levels across 3,625 schools, according to a report by Urban Acres. The findings were revealed during a video conference on October 28 following a preliminary review of staffing and salary data.
Primary Education Director Sharad Gosavi and Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Director Dr Mahesh Palkar have instructed divisional deputy education officials, education officers, and pay unit superintendents to investigate these discrepancies. The review also found 1,484 excess non-teaching staff in 1,206 schools.
The department noted several administrative inconsistencies. In 612 schools, sanctioned posts had no employees working against them, while 3,642 schools had no employee records in the Shalarth system or staffing approval data. Additionally, 842 schools listed employees on Shalarth despite lacking staffing approval records.
Officials are also addressing 10,695 employees who were detached from their drawing and disbursing officer (DDO) codes. The department has asked authorities to clarify how excess staff should be adjusted against sanctioned positions and to update provident fund records for aided school employees.
The department directed that the opening balance as of April 1, 2021, must be entered into the Shalarth system by November 15. Authorities must also ensure regular employees receive salaries on the first day of every month and complete pending work to avoid technical issues during the December 2026 salary payments.
