Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket after 14-year career
The 38-year-old Australian all-rounder also confirmed he will step away from domestic red-ball and 50-over cricket for Victoria.
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, according to Telangana Today and ANI. The 38-year-old's final appearance for Australia was against Oman in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 in February, where he took two wickets but did not bat.
Speaking on 'The Final Word' podcast released on Tuesday, Maxwell said he is also retiring from domestic games for Victoria in the 50-over and red-ball formats. He noted that there will be significant change over the next 12 to 24 months with the 2028 Olympics approaching, and teams must ensure young players are exposed to international pressure.
Maxwell, nicknamed the 'Big Show', played 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is and seven Tests. He was part of Australia's World Cup winning squads in 2015 and 2023, as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup. He finished his international career with 10 centuries and 136 wickets across all formats.
The player admitted he had hoped for a farewell match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but said he understood the squad's direction. He noted that discussions with Australian team management regarding his retirement were open-ended and without pressure.
During his ODI career, Maxwell scored 3,990 runs at a strike rate of 126.7, while he added 2,897 runs in T20Is at a strike rate of 154.4. One of his career highlights was an unbeaten double century against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup.
