Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announces retirement from international cricket
The 38-year-old player is also retiring from domestic 50-over and four-day cricket for Victoria.
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday, according to reports by The Times of India, Hindustan Times and Deccan Herald. The 38-year-old also confirmed he is retiring from domestic 50-over and four-day cricket for Victoria.
Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he needs to invest more time in his fitness to prepare his body for the remaining tournaments in his career. He noted that retiring from red-ball cricket was likely inevitable.
Maxwell represented Australia in 149 One Day Internationals (ODIs), 130 T20 Internationals (T20Is) and seven Test matches. He was a member of Australia's 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup-winning teams and the 2021 T20 World Cup-winning squad.
The batter scored 3,990 runs in ODIs and 2,897 runs in T20Is. He is one of only two players, alongside India's Rohit Sharma, to score five international centuries in the T20 format. He also took 128 wickets for Australia in the two shorter formats.
Maxwell had hoped for a farewell match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) against England, but he said he understands the team's decision to focus on younger players in the squad. His last appearance for Australia was against Oman at the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in February.
