Cyclone Murasu to hit Andhra Pradesh coast with 120 kmph winds

Severe cyclonic storm Murasu is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Narsapur with heavy rainfall forecast for several states.

Severe cyclonic storm Murasu is expected to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur, near Ongole, between late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, according to The New Indian Express. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that the storm could bring wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 120 kmph.

The cyclone was moving northwestwards over the west-central Bay of Bengal on Monday. As the system approaches, at least 19 domestic flights were cancelled at Vijayawada, Tirupati, and Visakhapatnam airports. IndiGo cancelled 10 flights and Air India Express cancelled two at Vijayawada Airport, while Visakhapatnam and Tirupati airports also reported cancellations.

Heavy rainfall has already lashed northern Tamil Nadu, causing inundation in parts of Chennai. Authorities in Chennai declared a school holiday on Monday due to the weather. The IMD warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall may persist in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts.

In Odisha, officials are moving people from vulnerable areas to safety. Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said that while the landfall is expected in Andhra Pradesh, southern Odisha districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri will be impacted. More than 300 rescue teams have been placed on standby.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to remain alert for moderate to heavy rainfall in the South coastal region and Rayalaseema. He expressed hope that the impact would be limited as forecasts suggest lower wind speeds and rainfall intensity compared to Cyclone Arnab.
