Cyclone Murasu brings heavy rain to Chennai and Telangana districts

Severe cyclonic storm Murasu is expected to make landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast between Monday midnight and Tuesday morning.

Severe cyclonic storm Murasu drenched northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, from Sunday evening, November 1, according to The Hindu. The system is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur between Monday midnight and the early hours of Tuesday.

Heavy rainfall was recorded in Chennai during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday, with Kadapakkam and Parrys corner each receiving 15 cm. Manali and Sathangadu also recorded 13 cm of rain. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has upgraded weather alerts for Chennai and Tiruvallur districts.

V.R. Durai, Head of the RMC, said rainfall may continue on Tuesday due to the cyclone's influence, though intensity may reduce to moderate in north Tamil Nadu after the system makes landfall. Durai warned fishermen against venturing into north coastal Tamil Nadu waters due to squally winds peaking at 80 km/h, though he noted chances for major storm surges are lower than during Cyclone Arnab.

In Telangana, heavy rainfall is expected in several southern districts from the afternoon of November 2, according to a Deccan Chronicle report. Khammam, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Rangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal are likely to be affected, with some areas potentially seeing very heavy rain. Rainfall in Telangana is expected to decrease after November 6.

South Tamil Nadu is expected to receive heavy rainfall from November 5, with Theni and Dindigul likely to see heavy rain on that day. Nine other districts, including Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram, may record heavy rainfall until November 7. RMC officials noted that rainfall activity may cover more districts from November 8.
