Karnataka government plans official status for Kannada flag

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar says the yellow and red flag will be discussed during the upcoming winter legislature session in Belagavi.

The Karnataka government is planning to grant official state flag status to the yellow and red Kannada flag, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on Sunday. According to reports from The New Indian Express and Deccan Herald, the government aims to facilitate the hoisting of the flag alongside the national flag on government buildings.

Speaking at the 71st Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, Shivakumar said the matter will be discussed during the upcoming winter session of the state legislature in Belagavi. He stated that the government is examining legal aspects and will take a Cabinet decision before introducing legislation.

Shivakumar noted that the Cabinet had previously submitted a proposal to the Union government but has not yet received recognition. He said the government intends to pass a resolution to seek legal protection from the Union government during the Belagavi session.

The Chief Minister described the flag as a symbol of the identity, emotions, and self-respect of Kannadigas. He added that the flag conveys the state's knowledge tradition, culture, religious harmony, and peace.

In a separate development, Minister for Scheduled Tribes Welfare T Raghumurthy said the government is considering a 5 per cent job reservation for Kannadigas in multinational companies operating in the state.
