Wizz Air flight diverted to Budapest after mid-air bomb threat

A Hungarian fighter jet escorted the London to Sofia flight to Budapest for emergency security inspections.

A Wizz Air flight travelling from London Luton Airport to Sofia was diverted to Budapest on Monday following a mid-air bomb threat, according to reports by BBC News and Bhaskar English.

The Airbus A321neo, which was flying over Bosnia and Herzegovina, landed at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport at approximately 12:09 local time. Hungarian Defence Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendis stated that a Hungarian Defence Forces Gripen fighter jet was scrambled within minutes to escort the passenger aircraft to the airport.

After the jet returned to its base, police and authorities took over the incident. Wizz Air said the aircraft taxied to a designated stand where security checks were performed on both the passengers and the plane.

The airline confirmed it is cooperating fully with officials and stated that the safety of its crew and passengers is its highest priority. Wizz Air later reported that the inspection was finished and no threats were discovered, noting the aircraft would resume its journey soon.

Flight tracking data showed the flight departed Luton at 08:33 GMT and was originally scheduled to arrive in Sofia at 13:25 local time.
